     122. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

Through the ages people have been setting goals of different kind and once they are achieved, humans tend to focus on a new target. Such behavior is natural for humankind since it promotes evolution and change. Having said that, I’m of the opinion that people will always be longing for more since their appetites for material and immaterial benefits are insatiable. In this essay I will discuss different aspects of the problem to substantiate my point of view.

Firstly, setting and achieving goals is part of human nature. It’s an instinct taking people to procreate and continue their lineage. Besides ensuring the survival of the human race, such behavior helps improve the environment and achieve higher standards of living. The main principle of humankind’s evolution is based on the curiosity of people and their ability to set and manage new goals.

Secondly, in today’s materialistic world people tend to indulge in consumerism without restraint. People buy a lot of fashion items though they have more than enough to wear. Moreover, they shop for designer clothes which only last one season. To my mind, this all is a tremendous waste of resources and money. What’s more/On top of that, extensive advertising lures people into buying products that they do not really need. In big cities billboards and TV commercials are ubiquitous since promoters are striving to win yet another costumer at all costs.

Finally, humankind has quite a history of self-indulgent behavior which is reflected in folklore and fiction. In Russia, every child is familiar with the fairy tale by famous writer Alexander Pushkin “The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish”. It depicts human nature while insightfully teaching a lesson of how excessive desires can destroy one’s life.

In conclusion, it’s true that people are never content with what they have. People generally tend to set new targets after achieving the old ones. Whereas it could be a problem in some instances, such dissatisfaction causes the society to evolve, improving people’s level of life.
